In late August 2016, Belgian authorities at the port of Antwerp arrested a young Albanian man, who was staying hidden in an empty container.
The ban on the young Albanian man with the villages of Kumanovo and f.k. incials, at the time 23 years old was made after information that Belgian police had received that a large amount of cocaine was being trafficked in the port towards England by a traffic network run by Albanians.
The albanian teenager initially denied drug trafficking charges and said he had been entered into the container with the aim of illegally emigrating to England, where some relatives were waiting for him.
But after Belgian authorities opened his phone and sent calls and messages, he surrendered and admitted that he was in the container as the aunt of a sophisticated cocaine trafficking chain arriving from Latin America to Europe.
After his testimony, authorities learned more in detail about the scheme in question, which they called the "Horse of Troy". This is allegedly the second most preferred method by criminal groups to traffic Latin American cocaine into the EU.
The scheme is not that complicated. It requires one, or more people to stay hidden in an empty container and wait until they are notified by message, or call to get out and take the goods that arrived with the other containers.
Messages, or calls give them the container number and its exact location at the port. The cocaine is then taken from the cargo container and placed in the empty container, which usually according to procedures is later withdrawn from the port. This method has been proven by Europol to have been used at several EU ports over the years.
According to Europol data, in the last decade Europe has been flooded with cocaine, turning not only into consumers, but also transit routes for drugs that have been used as a Middle East destination.
Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain are the main traffic sites, where according to the table below, compared to 2010 the drug and the sequirrel has multiplied.
