On the surname Mehmeti in the army: Who was Bujar Nishani, the 5th President of
Bujar Nishani

Bujar Nishani, the fifth President of the Republic of Albania after the arrival of democracy in Albania, has passed away today after suffering from an autoimmune disease in the liver.

Who was Bujar Nishani

Bujar Nishani was a military and career politician.

Born in Durrës, with roots in Gjirokastra, the newly elected President of the Republic, as soon as he completes his eight-year education, starts his long education at the Military Academy "Skënderbej", first high school and then high school. He completes his education with excellent results, so he is appointed as a lecturer at the only university where the officers of the Albanian army are formed. Nishani belongs to a family with intellectual background, and is even related to one of the former presidents of the country, Omer Nishani. But for a period of time, as a result of the biographical conjunctures that were forced in the communist regime, Nishani bears the surname Mehmeti, which after the fall of communism returns to the origin of family roots.

With the advent of democracy in the country, right after the appointment of the late Safet Zhulali as Minister of Defense, Bujar Nishani is called to work in the defense department, as an expert and director of foreign relations of this institution. In 1994, as a result of his work and results, he was promoted to the office of the Ministry of Defense dealing with relations with NATO. Two years later, in 1996, Nishani was called to work in the cabinet of Minister Zhulali, as one of his close people. But the official career of the military would be banned, as a result of political changes in Albania, when in 1997 the Socialists came to power.

Bujar Nishani, during the left-wing government, severed ties with the uniform and slowly entered the profession of politician. After some time in the free profession, Nishani returns active in the Democratic Party, of which he became a member in 1991, shortly after its founding. But a rise in his political career would signal the first signal in the 2001 parliamentary elections, when he would become more active. The work as a political activist would be promoted by being elected to one of the highest positions of the PD branch of the capital, where Nishani was elected in 2001 as its secretary.

Exactly the most important structure on the ground of the then opposition would give Bujar Nishani the final impetus to rise to the top of the blue headquarters policy.

In the July 2005 elections, Nishani won spectacularly in a left-wing constituency such as Kombinati, competing with then-Interior Minister Igli Toska. Elected to the senior leadership of the Democratic Party, Nishani was not immediately included in the executive of the Democratic Party, but the time would come after the resignation of Sokol Olldashi as Minister of Interior, as a result of losing the race for mayor of Tirana. Nishani held the post of head of the police department until the 2009 parliamentary elections, after which he was appointed Minister of Justice. But in 2011 he would return to the post of Interior Minister after the resignation of Lulzim Basha.

On July 24, 2012, Bujar Nishani was sworn in as President of the Republic before the Albanian Parliament for a term. From 2017 onwards he continued with his political engagement at the blue headquarters.

The former head of state left behind his wife Odeta Nishani and two children, Ersi and Fiona Nishani.
