Volkswagen plans to cut about 50,000 more jobs in the coming years as part of a broad package of measures to cut costs and increase competitiveness, according to Reuters.

The new cuts will be added to the previous plan to reduce 50,000 jobs by 2030, potentially bringing the total number of jobs that could be eliminated to around 100,000.

However, Volkswagen has not yet determined exactly how many jobs will be cut, where and over what period.

The company is facing rising costs, strong competition from Chinese manufacturers, especially in China, as well as pressure on German factories.

The German group aims to reduce costs and excess production capacities, while it has decided that the Seat brand will gradually exit the market and close by 2029.

Instead, Volkswagen will focus more on the Cupra brand, which has already surpassed Seat in sales.

In the first half of 2026, Cupra sold around 170,100 vehicles, compared to Seat's 129,600.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen aims to reduce production in Europe by around 500,000 vehicles.

Also in focus are the four German factories in Emden, Zuickau, Hannover and Neckarsulm, which could be closed between 2031 and 2034 if significant savings are not achieved by 2027.

The company expects to sell around 9 million vehicles in 2030, down from 11 million in 2019. The agreement was reached after intensive negotiations between Volkswagen, the IG Metall union and the state of Lower Saxony, avoiding for the time being a major clash between shareholders and company executives.
