As concerns about the energy situation, especially in Europe, are increasing dramatically, the Secretariat of the Energy Community published on August 29 the document on energy poverty, which seems to be even more worrying from recent developments.

This document, which is the product of a previous study, calculates the figures of the population that cannot afford to heat the house according to the standards that are established for a quality life. In this context, energy poverty is identified and addressed in the contractual parties of the Energy Community, of which Albania is also a member.

"Energy is essential to ensure an adequate standard of living and health. In Europe, energy poverty is a growing concern that puts the health and well-being of millions of citizens at risk.

According to recent estimates, 7.4% of European Union citizens cannot keep their homes adequately warm. In the Contracting Parties of the Energy Community, the share of the population unable to afford adequate heating comfort is even higher, ranging from 9.5% in Serbia to 35.8%. in Albania" notes the Secretariat.

By doing a more detailed analysis, the document underlines that in Albania, 37% of all families declare that they cannot keep their homes warm properly.

"The value of 37% can be considered as an upper limit for the estimated number of households with energy poverty in Albania, as separate data that would enable the calculation of The information required to calculate the lower limit was not available," the study states.

The document calculates that out of 734 thousand families in Albania, those who receive benefits for energy are 213 thousand or an average of 29 percent. The financial support is calculated at 22 million euros, making Albania the second place among the contracting parties with more funds for energy poverty.

But as the Secretariat's study published at the end of 2021 and developed with policies and guidelines during this year highlights a picture of energy poverty, the real situation due to the crisis has changed even further.

Energy poverty in the conditions of the crisis that has rested countries globally is expected to further increase the number of those who will have the tendency to save by not heating appropriately, just as it may increase the number of countries with restrictions by worsening the indicators.

Energy prices on the stock market have increased dramatically, exceeding 1,000 euros/mwh, as autumn and winter remain unclear about how the supply will be met and how much energy will be available in the market, but above all, what costs will be faced places./N.Maho
