"Anti-Russian" in Kiev, anti-American in Tirana

At the beginning of 1999, when the world was dealing with Kosovo and the risk of conflict there, then with the Rambouillet Conference, and then with the bombings, Sali Berisha was the most isolated politician in Tirana, due to his deep crisis with the USA. since 1997, a crisis that had penetrated his relations with European governments. He was isolated and no one even invited him for coffee.

In an attempt to become interesting, while the Rambouillet Conference was taking place, he began to talk from Tirana daily about how the issue should be resolved, asking the Albanian delegation in Rambouillet for five consecutive days, from 18 to 23 February. 1999, not to sign. According to him, the reason was that the Rambouillet Conference was against the independence of Kosovo.

It is not that anyone asked Berisha, neither in Rambouillet, nor in Kosovo, as those he called allies in the delegation, Ibrahim Rugova and Bujar Bukoshi, were in favor of signing and against Berisha.

The problem posed by Berisha's statement was that he was the only voice in the Albanian language that went beyond the Contact Group that convened the Rambouillet Conference.

The Contact Group framework was an international presence in Kosovo, a peace agreement overseen by an international presence and, three years later, a referendum on self-declaration.

Hashim Thaçi's hesitations within the Conference were within this framework, so they were manageable, while Berisha's objections from Tirana were to blow up the entire framework of the Contact Group, ie to cancel the conference. But this is as if he were being considered. He was actually ignored.

A few weeks later the Conference ended and the bombing began. He was again isolated and every day "gave ideas and thoughts" on how to win the war with "shoulder mortar", with light or heavy weapons, which in their entirety did not radiate his military potential, but the isolation of his, mental degradation, and the need to become important in this world war, when no one was asking him.

I was reminded of this scene today, as the man with his family on the US "Black List" for significant corruption and undermining democracy in the country was reminding Albania, NATO and the Americans how we could supply bullets to Ukraine. He said it so bluntly, as if the US, which controls the Albanian army and its policies, NATO and Albania itself, are working for Russia and not Ukraine.

The other fixation then, why exactly should we give them bullets and nothing else, comes from the idea that he and his son have connected with the bullets of our army, the most corrupt story that has caused 26 killed and 300 wounded in Albania, only to earn them as a family some money.

Përveçse banale, është dhe e dhimbshme se si katandiset një njeri që mund të vdiste i qetë në shtëpinë e vet, pa qenë nevoja të turpërohej në pleqëri. Por ja që zotit nuk i mungon koha të të turpërojë ende pa vdekur.

Sali Berisha's desperate tragic-comic attempt to appear anti-Russian in the conflict with Ukraine, in the hope that another America will be found near him in Tirana, is a fixed torturous dream with which he deserves to escape from this world, without ever seeing it with the naked eye.
