Three days before stealing more than a million euros worth of jewelry from a jewelry store in San Sebastián de los Reyes (Madrid), Mitescu, 40 years old and of Albanian origin, bought a car.
An old Hyundai Santa Fe, for which he paid 4,000 euros.
The owners, a married couple, later told investigators from the Madrid National Police's theft unit that they almost sold the car because he hadn't even come to pay in person, but had sent someone else with an excuse.
But what they couldn't imagine was that they were dealing with a long-time jewelry thief, with at least five different identities, wanted by Belgium, the Netherlands, and Greece.
"A professional," according to the police, who saw the opportunity to carry out the major theft during the total darkness of last April 28, which left all of Spain without electricity.
With the entire country paralyzed and plunged into general chaos, Mitescu waited for nightfall and left the apartment in Alcobendas, where he had temporarily rented a room.
He climbed into his gray Hyundai and headed toward the Plaza Norte 2 shopping center, where the José Luis jewelry store, with the “JL” logo, is located on the top floor of the impressive glass-domed building near the N-1. In his backpack he carried a circular saw, a screwdriver, a hammer, and ropes.
He left the car a few streets away from his destination and, most likely, got there by walking, just as he then left.
Investigators have yet to figure out how he climbed to the roof of the shopping center, but after reviewing more than 500 hours of footage from security cameras in the area, which continued to run on their generators, they first saw him with his face covered, his bag on his back, and taking references with his cellphone on the highest part of the building.
"It looked like he was checking with someone if he was in the right place, right above the jewelry store," say investigators, who managed to track his movements step by step until they handcuffed him.
Mitescu, the surname that appeared on his passport when he was arrested on October 21, began to search the roof with a circular saw until he found the right spot. The precision of his movements and his obvious knowledge of the building's intricacies led investigators to believe that the theft was very well planned, with a lot of information. "He probably thought he was given the ideal opportunity with total darkness and acted," they say.
“Lëvizjet e tij tregojnë se çanta i rëndonte shumë, sepse e mbushi me bizhuteri”, sigurojnë agjentët.
“I am a truck driver, I come from Romania, where I live with my wife and daughter, there must have been a mistake.” But his face and demeanor change when the agents start calling him by the different names that appeared on his passports, and he surrenders when they ask him about the gold cross he was wearing around his neck.
'My daughter gave it to me,' he says as they take it away from him during a routine check at the police station.
His confidence and pride disappear when they show him the initials engraved on the piece of gold: JL, of the José Luis store.
The thief wore evidence of his crime hanging around his neck. The rest of the thousands of jewels have yet to be found.
