Albania loses another talent of the future, just hours after Brajan Gruda decided to represent Germany. This time it is Adri Mehmeti who has accepted the invitation of the United States National Team, led by Mauricio Pochettino.
Despite the 17-year-old being an option for the Albanian National Team, his desire to represent the USA has now been materialized, as he has been recruited by coach Mauricio Pochettino.
Mehmeti has been included in the list of 28 players for the next four friendlies, where the Argentine coach has chosen to entrust a considerable number of young players.
Originally from Saranda, Mehmeti was born and raised in New York.
He has been part of the United States youth national teams and has now made the step towards the National Team.
Previously, the 17-year-old also played for Albania U-15, where he also scored a goal.
The Albanian Football Federation has been in constant contact with the player's family, which has been undecided about choosing the national team and, in the end, has not given a positive response for Albania.
Mehmeti himself has described the invitation as the realization of a childhood dream. Recalling the emotions he experienced while watching the USA in the World Cup, he said that the goals of the American National Team caused him special emotions and made him imagine himself one day on that team.
"It's something I've dreamed about since I was a kid, watching them play. Receiving this invitation was really exciting. I'm very happy," said Mehmeti.
At club level, Mehmeti plays for the New York Red Bulls in MLS. This season he has recorded one goal and three assists in 24 appearances, being considered one of the most promising young talents in American soccer.
The first match for the USA will be against Peru, on September 26. After that, the Americans will face Chile, Mexico and Canada.
