Italy beat Northern Ireland 2-0 and will face Edin Dzeko's Bosnia on Tuesday 31 March. An opponent they were probably hoping to face, judging by the celebration shown in a video that went viral and was broadcast live by Rai after the match in Bergamo.

The footage showed several Italian players such as Dimarco, Pio Esposito, Vicario, Meret and Tonali, who were glued to the television in the Gewiss Stadium to follow the penalty shootout between Wales and Bosnia, precisely to immediately learn the opponent against whom Gattuso's national team will play for the World Cup.

After Bosnia's final penalty, it was Dimarco who immediately celebrated with other players and staff. The video has already gone viral abroad and in Bosnia they are talking about a lack of respect.

"Look at the lack of respect of the Italians. And their arrogance. They celebrated our victory with a penalty: we will take this into account in Zenica," the Bosnian pages say.

For many, the feeling is that Italy wanted Bosnia as an opponent, considering it, apparently, less strong. But it is known – and there are two precedents – in these cases, calculations should not be made.

Meanwhile, during the broadcast on Rai and the moment these images appeared, Adani lost his temper and "scolded" the director: "You said not to show them."

After the match, in connection between the pitch and the studio were Alessandro Antinelli, Andrea Stramaccioni and then the two voices of Rai's commentary for Italy: Alberto Rimedio and Lele Adani. Antinelli starts the footage and explains: "Dimarco and Pio Esposito saw it all" - before Stramaccioni intervenes who comments on the moment of Dimarco's celebration - "And there are scenes...". At that moment Rimedio intervenes and immediately interrupts the commentator:

"Let's not say it, let's not say it, silence" - followed by Adani's intervention who "scolds" Rai's director - "Guys, you said not to tell them, then focus on them when they celebrate, we have to celebrate on Tuesday". In fact, Adani's intervention is more than fair and Antinelli tries to fix the situation: "Let's just say we made 20 minutes of imaginative television" - and so Adani ends with a joke - "This wasn't a bad moment, it must be said that they were good".

Harsh reaction

The reaction from the world to what happened has been quite controversial. Many have criticized the somewhat arrogant and superficial attitude of Italy, which with those images clearly suggests that it preferred Bosnia to Wales. The first Italian fans have not overcome that image, saying that "someone should tell those players who celebrated for Bosnia that they wear 4 stars on their chests".

A video that is producing a boomerang effect, motivating Bosnia even more – after being shared by many pages dealing with Bosnian football – ready to show that it is at the right height. So, if with Sweden it was an own goal that eliminated the Italians, this can be considered another own goal prematurely, before the 90 minutes – or more – that separate them from the World Cup after two consecutive absences.
