The Chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has stated that the DP Parliamentary Group is ready to vote in favor of the military agreement with the United States for the purchase of defense equipment, if its approval procedure is restored in accordance with the Constitution.

In a statement to the media, Berisha stressed that the opposition has no objections to the agreement itself, but has sent to the Constitutional Court the procedure followed by the majority for its approval.

According to him, Albania needs to modernize its military capabilities, especially in a period of numerous tensions and conflicts in the world. Berisha thanked the United States for the financial support that enables the Albanian army to purchase modern defense equipment.

However, he accused Prime Minister Edi Rama of attempting to conduct an unconstitutional procedure through the Assembly, by not respecting deadlines and procedural requirements. Berisha said that the Democratic MPs had expressed their position that they supported the agreement, but demanded that it be read by the MPs and that the constitutional deadlines be respected.

According to him, the opposition's request was for the vote to take place after the end of the scheduled deadline, while the decision to hold the vote earlier was a procedural violation.

"We have no objections to the agreement. We have informed the American side that we are ready at any time that, if it is restored and placed on constitutional tracks, the DP deputies are ready to vote for it," Berisha declared.

He added that the decision to address the Constitutional Court is related only to the manner of approval of the agreement and not to its content. According to Berisha, the Constitutional Court in previous cases has identified problems with the procedures followed in similar processes.
