Three underwater volcanoes have been discovered by a group of scientists' expedition to waters off Sicily.

They said the volcanoes are about 6 kilometers wide and rise to an altitude of 150 meters from the seabed. The volcanoes join another group discovered in 2019.

Dario Civile, a researcher at OGS who participated in the project, said: "We believe this is a very important discovery because it sheds light on the unexplored seabed. The Mediterranean has been floating for millennia, yet, surprisingly, we know very little about its seabed," he said.

He said hydrothermal activity has also been detected, but analysis of the stones taken is expected to reveal whether the volcanoes are active or not.

Although underwater eruptions often go unnoticed, more than 1 million volcanoes are believed to be underwater and they are the source of 80% of volcanic activity around the world.
