A Maltese trafficker who was linked to the Sicilian clans was arrested this weekend following an arrest warrant issued by the Catania prosecutor's office accompanied by an extradition request.
During the first hearing, which was held yesterday, the judges rejected the request for parole and postponed the court hearing until June 20 to decide on his extradition.
A 56-year-old man named John Spiteri, otherwise known as 'Gianni', is wanted in Italy for setting up a structured mafia-style criminal group that trafficked cocaine and marijuana.
In 2021, the Maltese trafficker was part of a group of 21 people arrested in Italy as part of 'Operation La Vallette' against a criminal organization that trafficked drugs from Albania and Bulgaria to Sicily and Malta.
During the operation, which at that time was carried out by over 100 agents of the Guardia di Finanza, a total of 430 kilograms of cannabis, hashish and cocaine were seized, write the Italian media.
According to Italian investigators and based on their wiretaps, it turns out that Spiteri was connected with the Italian Rosario Amico to organize drug trafficking from Puglia to Malta between 2018 and 2019 with a car with Maltese license plates that was physically driven by another Maltese, Spiteri's collaborator , 55-year-old Fabian Catania, accused of drug trafficking in 2018 and together with the Albanian Eriseld Hoxhaj, known as 'Riku'.
To avoid extradition, Spiter's lawyer noted that his crimes in Malta risk life imprisonment, while in Italy he could be sentenced to just 24 years for structured criminal group and 13 years for drug trafficking.
