"Very significant"/ The meaning behind the papal name of the new Pope,
Pope Leo XIV

St. Peter's Square is ringing with bells following the speech of the Vatican's new Pope, Leo XIV.

American missionary Robert Francis Prevost spent his life in Peru. He is the first American Pope in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.

Father Robert Sirico told Sky News: " It's wonderful to have an American."

The priest, who is also American and head of the Acton Institute, adds that Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was "very international" and a member of the Augustinian order.

"He was a missionary and a member of a religious order, so that's significant, we've now had two popes in a row who are members of religious orders, as opposed to priests of dioceses. I know he speaks five or six foreign languages fluently and recently served in the Congregation for Bishops."

Asked about the name Leon, which was last used by Pope Leo XIII in 1878, the priest says it is "significant."

"He was truly a theologian, a thinker who preached about the importance of the family and the dignity of work, a very significant historical figure. Pope Leo's goal now is to continue that work and then give us an indication of his direction."

The new pope is the 267th in history and was elected in the fourth round of the second day of the Vatican conclave.
