The United States has imposed sanctions on two other politicians in the Balkans, saying they have threatened the stability of the region by undermining the Dayton Peace Accords and democratic institutions.

The two officials hit with sanctions today are Marinko Cavara, the president of Bosnia, and Alen Seranic, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare of the Bosnian Serb entity Republika Srpska, the Treasury Department said in a press release.

"Marinko Cavara and Alen Seranic have each sought to pursue ethno-nationalist and political agendas at the expense of the democratic institutions and citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina," said in a press release the Undersecretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian Nelson.

Cavara has refused to appoint judges to the Bosnian Constitutional Court, blocking the tribunal's function of the national vital interest panel (VNI), a body that aims to address key issues raised by delegates to parliament.

"Through his inaction, Cavara has held hostage the function of the VNI panel to advance the political interests of himself and his party," the press release said.

The Treasury Department said its sanctions against Seranic came after he expanded sanctions earlier this year on Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik, who has led a campaign to strengthen a secessionist effort to withdraw from state-level institutions. , despite warnings from the West.

The sanctions against Seranic were created to "further address this destabilizing behavior", REL reports.

Seranic has led the implementation of a law on medicines and medical products that would create a new medicine agency only within Republika Srpska.

"Seranic has publicly acknowledged that this law reflects the functions of the state-level drug agency, except that the agency that creates it transfers authority from the state-level agency to a regulatory authority for medicines and medical products within RS," the Treasury said.

A state-level institution serving Republika Srpska and Bosnia already exists, and so "the creation of this new agency at the unit level hinders or threatens the implementation of the Dayton peace agreements," the Treasury said.

The sanctions order freezes any U.S. property and assets held by the two men and prohibits U.S. persons from dealing with them.
