Germany's three ruling parties plan to deprive former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder of the right to have office and staff, as he maintained and defended his long-standing ties with Russia despite the war in Ukraine.

Schr .der's Social Democratic Party said Wednesday that lawmakers in the parliamentary budget committee had agreed to link some of the former German leader's privileges to current duties, instead of his status as a former chancellor.

They planned to present a proposal to lawmakers Thursday. Former Chancellor Schroeder has become increasingly isolated in recent months because of his work for Russian state-controlled energy companies.

The 78-year-old is chairman of the supervisory board of Russian state-owned energy company Rosneft and has also been involved in gas pipeline projects.

Earlier this year his office staff resigned and Schroeder faced a new wave of anger from former political allies after the New York Times quoted him as saying the Bucha civilian massacre "should be investigated", but that he did not think the orders had come from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is an old friend.
