Hungarian Prime Minister Orban: Trump intends to cut off financial support for
Donald Trump/Viktor Orban

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban , said after a private meeting with Donald Trump in the United States that the former American president has "pretty detailed plans" on how to end Russia's war in Ukraine and that he will not to provide Kiev with additional funds to speed up the end of the conflict.

Speaking in an interview after returning to Hungary for state television M1 on March 10, Orbani said "it is very clear that Ukraine alone cannot stand on its own two feet."

Orban's government has refused to send weapons to Kiev, while maintaining relations with Moscow.

The Hungarian leader made the visit to the US at a time when a $60 billion package is being blocked by Republicans in the US House of Representatives, who are insisting that border security measures be included in the package in exchange for support theirs for sending money to Kiev.

US President Joe Biden, a Democrat who is expected to be the front-runner for the presidential election in November, has supported this package, but Trump, who has criticized it.

"He will not pour a single cent into the Ukraine-Russia war and that's how the war will end," Orbani said in the interview, referring to Trump, who has almost become the Republican Party's candidate for the November elections.

"If the Americans don't give money and weapons, and neither do the Europeans, then this war will end. And, if the Americans don't give money, the Europeans are not able to finance this war alone, and so this war would end," he added.

Orban has distanced himself from most of the bloc's leaders in the European Union by maintaining relations with autocratic leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Orban traveled to the United States last week, where he spoke at the conservative Heritage Foundation and later met with Trump at his luxury Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, while there was no meeting at the White House during the trip. .

The Trump campaign said in a statement on March 8 that during the meeting they discussed "a range of issues related to Hungary and the United States, including the paramount importance of strong and secure borders to protect the sovereignty of each nation."

The communiqué did not mention Ukraine or any other topic.

Orbani said that peace in Ukraine must be achieved first through a ceasefire and then through a peace agreement, which Trump "has the means" to achieve. He gave no other details.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on March 11 that the Kremlin is aware of Orban's comments but declined to comment.

"We have seen it, but we have nothing to say, since there are no details and it is unclear what plan this could be," said Peskov.
