R&B star R. Kelly has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for using his fame by sexually abusing his young fans, some of whom are just children.

The 55-year-old singer was convicted of blackmail and sex trafficking last year in a trial that gave voice to accusers who once wondered if their stories were being ignored because they were women of color.

U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly handed down the sentence after hearing some survivors who testified about how Kelly exploitation echoed throughout their lives.

"You made me do things that break my soul. "I would literally like to die because of how low you made me feel," said one unidentified survivor, referring directly to a Kelly holding her hands folded and her eyes down. "Do you remember that?"

Kelly did not address the court.

Prosecutors had asked the judge to sentence Kelly to more than 25 years in prison, while his defense attorneys asked for 10 or less, saying the prosecutors' request was "tantamount to life imprisonment."

The decision puts an end to the slow decline of Kelly, who was adored by fans and sold millions of albums even after allegations of his abuse of young girls began circulating publicly in the 1990s.
