Chancellor Scholz, appeal to North Macedonia: Accept the French proposal
German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz

The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, addressed North Macedonia with a letter, where he said that the country is now close to a compromise that can guarantee the opening of negotiations with the European Union, 17 years after receiving the status of a candidate country.

In his letter, distributed by the German embassy in Skopje, it is emphasized that even if North Macedonia will accept the French proposal to resolve the dispute with Bulgaria, its membership in the EU will not be easy.

"Your country is once again facing an important decision. Do you want to accept the European compromise? And with this, 17 years after the allocation of candidate status for EU membership, the first membership conference can finally be held. This would be a step that would bring them closer to EU membership and overcome the blockade. I understand your impatience and your frustration. I even share this with you!

I understand you when you say: We have been promised too long and too much. What was asked of us was too much. I understand your doubts whether this step will really open the way to the EU. I want to be honest with you. Even after accepting this compromise, the EU accession process will not be easy. There will be other obstacles that must be overcome. But I also want to tell them: Together we will overcome the tasks that await us.

Because we want you to be a member of the EU. We love you, dear Macedonians, members of a Union where your cultural features, languages and identities are preserved and cared for. This makes us strong together. We all know that compromises are sometimes painful. The European Union is made up of compromises, every day. But I strongly believe that even difficult compromises in the end always make us stronger and move us forward. We are and will remain on your side! ", wrote the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz.

This Monday, the Speaker of the Assembly of North Macedonia, Talat Xhaferi, will meet the leaders of the parliamentary groups to discuss the French proposal.

During these discussions, it will also be determined when the plenary session will take place to inform the government about the proposal of the negotiating framework for membership in the European Union.
