Moscow announced on Monday that it will not send a congratulatory message to the United States to mark Independence Day.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the congratulations "can hardly be considered appropriate" citing what he called the "unfriendly policy" of the United States.

The US has opposed Russia's war in Ukraine. Washington has sent weapons to Kiev and helped train the country's military, while leading sanctions efforts against Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated previous US leaders on the holiday, including former presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a tweet on Monday, congratulated President Biden and the American people for "peace and prosperity".

"I appreciate the assistance provided by the United States to Ukraine, in the defense of common values, such as freedom, democracy and independence," Zelenskyy wrote.
