Tariffs against China come into effect/ Xi Jinping responds to the US: Impose
Donald Trump and Xi Jinping

On the day that tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump against all Chinese goods come into effect, Beijing retaliates with a package of measures targeting coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG) with tariffs of 15%, as well as an additional 10% tariff on oil, agricultural equipment and some types of cars.

The announcement came this morning, Albanian time, from the Chinese government. According to China's Ministry of Finance, the measures "are designed to counter" Trump's plans and will take effect on February 10.

Beijing has also filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) under the dispute settlement mechanism, arguing that the United States' actions have a "harmful nature" and violate China's legitimate rights and interests.

China's Ministry of Commerce and the General Administration of Customs have also announced a tightening of controls on exports of some other materials. The measure takes effect immediately, with the aim of "protecting national security and interests and fulfilling international obligations such as non-proliferation."

China has also announced an investigation into Google for possible violations of antitrust laws, just minutes after the US tariffs went into effect.
