The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which distributes billions of dollars in aid worldwide, may be closing down.
The world's richest man, Elon Musk, who is committed to reducing the costs of US federal spending, says President Donald Trump has agreed to close USAID.
According to him, Trump has signed off on the agency's closure.
"Regarding the USAID issues, I discussed it with the President in detail and he agreed that we should close it," said Elon Musk.
USAID's headquarters in Washington was closed today, as employees were notified by email to stay home and not report to work.
However, President Trump has not yet sealed the final closure, but attacked the leaders, saying they are from the radical left.
"It's run by a bunch of radical lunatics and we're taking them out. USAID is run by radical lunatics and we're taking them out. We'll make a decision then," Trump said.
A day ago, Elon Musk considered USAID a criminal organization, through a post he made on the social network X.
The clash came after representatives of the US Department of Defense, which is headed by Elon Musk to reduce government spending, were not allowed to enter the USAID building.
Two senior employees of this agency were subsequently fired by order of the Trump administration.
Democratic lawmakers have protested these measures, saying President Trump lacks the constitutional authority to shut down USAID without Congressional approval and criticizing Musk's access to classified government information through President Trump-authorized inspections of federal government agencies and programs.
Currently, USAID funds have been cut off worldwide, including Albania, through which a number of state institutions received funds.
Signals of the possible closure of the American humanitarian agency began to appear last week, with the removal of many publications about USAID's work around the world.
A similar thing has also happened on the website of the American Embassy in Albania, where all content related to USAID has now been deleted.
