Meeting called by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis

A meeting chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis took place at Megaro Maximos (Prime Minister's Office) with a focus on the recent seismic activity in the maritime area between Santorini and Amorgos.

In addition to the Prime Minister, the meeting was attended by Minister of Civil Protection Vasilis Kikilias, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Dimitris Choupis, Thanasis Ganas from the Geodynamic Institute, and Professor of Natural Disasters Kostas Synolakis.

Statements after the meeting

After the meeting ended, Vasilis Kikilias made statements on the decisions taken:

"We just finished the meeting under the leadership of the Prime Minister, where he and others were informed by our scientific team. The information will continue continuously. All seismic activity data is being reviewed, and the measures taken so far are preventive. The information will be uninterrupted and there will be continuous meetings of the Seismic Risk Management Committee. I call on our citizens to follow the instructions of specialists and respect the measures to cope with this situation. There is vigilance, the measures are preventive and the organization is complete. Since there is a committee and specialized scientists, I make a warm call for everyone to hear the facts from the experts for accurate information."

Expert analysis – Seismic activity similar to that of 2011–2012

During the meeting, seismologists analyzed the situation and noted that the current seismic activity resembles that of 2011–2012, but with greater intensity and a higher average number of tremors.

There is concern, but within logical limits. The greatest fear is related to the possibility of an earthquake above 6 on the Richter scale. The assessment of the measures will be done every day.

School closures and cancellation of public activities

Since Sunday morning, dozens of aftershocks above 3.4 on the Richter scale have been recorded in the sea area between Santorini and Amorgos. The strongest tremor was 3.7 on the Richter scale, recorded at 7:29 am.

The President of the Organization for Earthquake Planning and Protection (OASP), Professor Efthymios Lekkas, called an urgent meeting of the Standing Scientific Committee for Seismic Hazard Assessment and the Standing Scientific Committee for Monitoring the Greek Volcanic Arc. The aim was to assess the seismic activity and take possible preventive measures.

The committee recommended the closure of schools in Santorini and the avoidance of large gatherings indoors. Citizens are also advised to avoid the ports of Ammoudi and the Old Port of Fira, to ensure their safety in the event of a stronger earthquake.

Following these measures, the municipality of Thira announced their implementation, calling on residents to exercise caution and follow the instructions of the authorities. Scientists continue to monitor the development of seismic activity to assess further actions that may be necessary.

Authorities advised residents of Santorini, one of Greece's top tourist destinations, to avoid two small ports, not to gather in large numbers indoors, and schools will be closed on Monday. The same applies to the islands of Amorgos, Ios and Anafi, as the area has large seismic faults and the possibility of a strong earthquake cannot be ruled out.

Many citizens and tourists are leaving the country, urgently booking return tickets.
