President Donald Trump has again warned Canada in the ongoing trade war between the countries, reiterating that the neighboring country should become "the 51st state of the United States."
The US leader said this weekend that he will impose 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico.
Both countries responded with retaliatory tariffs, with their respective leaders announcing the measures on Saturday night.
Speaking on the “Truth Social” platform on Sunday afternoon, Trump said: “We pay hundreds of billions of dollars to SUBSIDIZE Canada. Why? There is no reason.
"We don't need anything they have. We have unlimited energy," he wrote.
He added that without “massive subsidization” Canada “will cease to exist.
"Therefore, Canada should become our beloved 51st state. Much lower taxes and much better military protection for the people of Canada – AND NO TARIFFS," Trump emphasized.
The Trump administration warned that the tariffs were intended to stop the spread and production of the opioid fentanyl, as well as to pressure America's neighbors to limit illegal immigration to the US.
