At least 198 Palestinians were killed in Gaza, while 1,610 were injured. The figures were announced by the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza.

The official statement did not provide many details about where the deaths occurred and whether they were Hamas militants or civilians.

Meanwhile, on the other hand, according to the Israeli Ministry of Health, 40 people were killed and 779 others were injured.

The Israeli military said about 2,200 rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel this Saturday since the fighting began. These figures contradict those of Hamas military commander Muhammad Al-Deif, who previously said 5,000 rockets had been fired. The Hamas group infiltrated southern Israel by parachute, from land and sea, in a surprise attack.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said they were at war, and vowed that the enemy would pay a high price.

The Israeli army spokesman, Daniel Hagari, said that the war is taking place as Israeli forces have been striking the southern border area.

In Iran, the only country that has supported the attack by Hamas, the deputies in the parliament shouted loudly: "Death to Israel" and "Palestine will win, Israel will be destroyed."

The massive attack by Hamas caught Israel off guard. Saturday's developments come exactly on the 50th anniversary of another war that also caught Israel by surprise.

The 1973 war brought Israel to the brink of catastrophic defeat. The battle began with a surprise attack on two fronts by a host of Syrian tanks and Egyptian brigades. Completely unprepared and with many soldiers on leave, the Israeli army appeared to be initially defeated before repulsing its enemies in a series of decisive attacks.

Over 2,600 Israelis were killed during the war, the largest loss Israel has ever suffered in a single war. On the other hand, although there are no confirmed casualty figures, 15,000 Egyptians and 3,500 Syrians are reported to have been killed during this war.
