Erdogan: We can part ways with the EU if necessary

The latest European Union report on Turkey is seen by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as an attempt by Brussels to break away from the Union.

"If you want to clearly and openly learn my assessment, the European Union is trying to break away from Turkey. During this period when the European Union is making moves to break away from Turkey, we will make our assessments regarding these developments. And after these evaluations, we can part ways with the European Union, if necessary," Erdogan said.

The report, approved by Brussels earlier this week, said Turkey's accession process to the 27-member bloc could not resume under current circumstances.

The Turkish side claims that the latest report is based on unfounded findings, prejudices and disinformation passed by anti-Turkish circles, but it is, above all, shallow and non-visionary. The last setting is a serious warning since Turkey has a very large weight in the management of the migration flow, one of the most difficult challenges for the EU. And in this regard, the Turkish side has not spared.

"In a critical period when the stability and security of our continent are at stake and when a new window of opportunity has opened to revitalize EU-Turkey relations, we find it irrational for the EU to bring to attention other issues parallel to the negotiations of acceptance, which are the pillar of EU-Turkey relations", the statement of the Turkish Foreign Ministry quotes.

Turkey has been an official candidate to join the EU for 24 years, but accession talks have stalled in recent years over the bloc's concerns about human rights abuses and respect for the rule of law.
