The American ambassador in Belgrade, Christopher Hill, has expressed that his impression after the meeting between the president of Serbia, Aleksandër Vucic and the prime minister of Kosovo, AlbIn Kurti, was that there has been some progress for Serbia.
Christopher Hill told "Tanjug" that he hopes that the process can continue and that by participating in it, Serbia can continue to work towards membership in the European Union.
"And there should be no other country between Serbia and the EU. Serbia must work with the EU. And my impression, of course, my preliminary impression of what happened in Brussels is that there has been progress for Serbia," he said.
He emphasized that the European Union has a great responsibility.
"They made a lot of effort and I think the US expressed a very principled position that we will support Mr. Borrell. If he is satisfied we will be; if he is not satisfied, we will be very unhappy," said the American ambassador.
He emphasizes that people should understand that within the framework of the Brussels dialogue there are actually two groups of negotiations, the negotiations between the Belgrade side and the EU and the Prishtina side and the EU.
"I did not participate in the negotiations, there were no Americans there either. But certainly based on what I've read, Mr. Borrell said that the Serbian side was well prepared and basically agreed with what the European Union proposed," Hill said.
He added that, as far as he understood, the European Union tried to propose some kind of compromise formula.
"From what I understand based on what Mr. Borrell said, they are trying to come up with a plan for the course of events. The issue of the Union of Serbian Municipalities, the issue of a greater space of Kosovo for internationalization - they are trying to work to establish the order of these elements. So we'll have to see how this all works out. As I said, these are really difficult negotiations, but I think that Serbia has done its homework and prepared well", concluded Hill.
