A far-right terrorist group in Finland plotted the assassination of Sanna Marin while the 37-year-old politician was serving as the country's prime minister.

Four people are in the dock in the trial that began in the city of Lahti and is attracting international media attention. Three of them face terrorism-related charges and the fourth is being prosecuted for weapons possession.

According to the Daily Mail, two of the defendants had openly talked about the possibility of a murderous attack on the then prime minister, at an activity of the Social Democratic Party in the same city in 2022. They had also published information about it on Telegram. During the interrogation, one of the team members said: "The FGC-9 weapon was next to me and in less than 10 minutes I could be at the Lahti market. I was talking about this kind of thing on Telegram, that theoretically it would be possible to kill a political figure".

The FGC-9 is a 3D printable PCC (Pistol Caliber Carbine) semi-automatic weapon.

This particular defendant claims that the talk of a terrorist attack was theoretical and they did not think about it, as they did not carry out their plan.

He described the conversations he took part in as "normal conversations" about how easily someone could kill the Finnish head of state. For him, it was just a way to talk about interesting extreme experiences.

Local police say the four men were followers of the "acceleration" movement, a group of ideas (in both left and right ideologies) that call for drastic intensification of capitalist development and technological change to destabilize existing systems of power. This ideology has been linked to a series of murderous attacks in the US, including the 2022 attack in Buffalo that killed 10 black civilians.

The defendants allegedly manufactured 3D printed weapons. In raids on their homes, lists of potential targets were found, including MPs, representatives of minority groups and anti-fascist activists.
