The well-known actor confesses to racism: The Greek policeman told me
Nikos Gelia

The well-known actor of Albanian origin, Nikos Gelia, who has been living and working for 25 years in Greece, has narrated the incident to some Greek policemen. This event happened several years ago.

He said that after the police verified his driver's license and learned that he was of Albanian origin, they were asked to open the trunk of the car, which contained the costumes of the shows.

The police had interrogated him about the work he was doing, and when he answered that he was an actor, they were surprised, "Albanian and actor too?!". Meanwhile, the actor did not spare them an ironic answer saying: "This also happens".

"A few years ago, the police stopped me near my house and asked to verify my license. When they found out that I was from Albania, they asked me to open the trunk, where I also had the costumes for the performances. They asked me what I do and I told them I am an actor. Then they told me that 'both an Albanian and an actor'? I answered with irony that "this also happens", said the actor.

The actor also confessed the difficulties he had to get the Greek identity card after 26 years, even though he is married to a Greek woman, who have children together.

"This year I finally received the Greek notification letter. In Greece to get a Greek identity card you have to prove that you are related to a Greek. For a second generation immigrant it is very difficult. I have friends from Afghanistan who have been in Greece for 25 years and are facing the same problem. 3 months ago I received the Greek identity card.

I had to fill in all the data, that I am married to a Greek woman, that we have a child together, that the mother of the child is Greek and is considered Greek and not Albanian, that I have been living here for more than 25 years and that I studied at a Greek university", said the actor.
