A staff member at the British Museum has been fired as police investigate after a number of objects from a rare collection were missing, damaged or even stolen.

In a statement moments earlier, the British Museum said the items include "gold jewellery and semi-precious stone jewels and glass dating from the 15th century B.C. to the 19th century AD."

The British Museum is one of the largest in the world with 50 galleries and exhibits containing artifacts from Egypt to China, Europe to the Islamic world.
