Russia is planning an armed provocation against Poland to test NATO's resolve. That is the warning the United States has conveyed to Warsaw, according to reports in the Polish press.
The attack could reportedly include striking Poland's critical infrastructure with missiles and drones, and even sending Russian soldiers across the border into NATO territory.
Sources close to Polish President Karol Nawrocki say the aim of Moscow's possible attack, which could be carried out within months, is to provoke tensions and put pressure on Ukraine's Western allies to suspend military and financial aid.
Security services in Warsaw have acknowledged that a conventional attack is possible, for example a small ground incursion, which Moscow could portray as an accident.
Other possibilities include drone attacks on power plants or simulated bombings, which could force Poland to activate its defense systems.
In the most extreme scenario, intelligence sources predict a hybrid attack in the border regions.
In a statement on Friday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused the European Union of turning into a military-economic bloc, expressing Moscow's concern over its large investments in militarization.
