Death toll from Venezuela earthquake reaches 2,595

The death toll from the earthquake that shook Venezuela a week ago has risen to 2,595, Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, announced at a press conference.

"We are still in the process of searching for people alive under the rubble. We must remain united and work together," she declared.

"This is not the time for political confrontation. The opposition has also helped me. Anyone who helps is welcome: this is what the Venezuelan people expect. I welcome and thank all those who can help, even from countries with which we do not have diplomatic relations. We must be united for Venezuela," she added.
