Former Israeli army chief lost his son in the Gaza war: Who is Gadi Eisenkot?

Former Israeli army chief Gadi Eisenkot has the clearest path to power if he can join forces with Arab-led parties, but achieving this may prove difficult.

This is a huge challenge for a man who has not proven himself sufficiently in the difficult Israeli tradition of coalition building.

The 66-year-old comes from a working-class family. He was raised by Moroccan Jewish immigrants. He spent four decades in the Israeli army, and speaks English with difficulty.

After Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, Eisenkot took on the role of observer in Netanyahu's war cabinet. That day, militants killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages. Israel then launched a war in Gaza that has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians.

In June 2024, Eisenkot left the war cabinet, following the example of a colleague; in his resignation letter, he wrote that Netanyahu was allowing politics to influence decision-making, which was harming Israel's ability to achieve its war goals.

Eisenkot's son and two grandsons, who had been sent to the front lines, also lost their lives during the fighting in Gaza.

These personal losses strengthened Eisenkot's position in the eyes of the Israelis and gave him credibility, as someone who, having paid the highest price, would not sacrifice soldiers unnecessarily.

Like almost all other politicians in Israel, Eisenkot has supported Israeli military operations in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran.

He has said he wants to reduce tensions with Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and follow US President Donald Trump's plan for Gaza.
