The local Milan branch of Corriere della Sera published an investigation this Monday, showing how the 30 Albanian doctors, according to this article, had cost Italian authorities 3m euros in taxes.
The author of the investigation says in writing that the figure comes out of investigations that local authorities are conducting into expenses committed during the pandemic in the Bergamo area in the first months of the pandemic.
This means that the figure is neither official nor reliable, at least at the moment. But beyond the costs and expenses that are said in the article dedicated to Albanian doctors, the whole writing sounds immoral.
Why? First, the period when little Albania extended the hand of aid to great Italy, with a health system many times more developed than ours, but which in the face of the pandemic wave was broken within weeks.
That March, Bergamo was totally isolated due to the virus and throughout the month recorded only this Italian region almost 6,000 dead from Covid. So the balance was heavier than a balance of war and comparable, for fatality with the real war currently taking place in Ukraine. The difference is that the centre of Italy's war with Covid was Bergamo and Breshia, while in Ukraine it is Mariupoli.
Today, in the face of this war, Ukrainians are not counting financial costs before human ones, and in this prism, at least morally, even Italy did not account for financial costs in that period. Investigations are underway and at the end of them may result in the true result that the 30 Albanian doctors have cost them 3ml euros, at a time the country spent billions curbing the virus and lowering human costs.
But the 3ml cost of Albanians is nothing before the fact that in the team of 100 and some Russian doctors and nurses, over 70 later turned out to be employees of the Russian secret services, who left for weeks free on the streets of Italy.
Of course, Corriere is right when he writes that 30 Albanian doctors were sent and used by Prime Minister Edi Rama for propaganda. This happened both inside and outside Albania. Inside created the idea that Albania not only had the capacities to cope with the pandemic itself, but the system also had excess human resources.
Abroad, the mission was used to cure the country's image in the eyes of the EU and advanced in integration ambition. In both cases, this propaganda may have claimed life in Albania, but it is certain that in Italy it has escaped... Be it even a single life, worth more than 3 mln euros.
