An unusual scene was recorded this Tuesday in front of the Supreme Court, where a group of citizens gathered to demand that Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj continue to remain in detention.
With megaphones and chants of "Albanians in freedom, Erion in cell", the protesters practically demanded confirmation of the most severe security measure against Veliaj, precisely on the day when the Supreme Court reviews his case.
But the protest also raises the question of why the same mobilization has not been seen in the case of Belinda Balluku?
The contrast becomes even stronger when considering the former deputy prime minister's procedural position. SPAK has announced that Balluku has been indicted and is being investigated for several criminal offenses, including violation of equality in tenders, passive corruption and money laundering. The investigations have recently been expanded with new facts related to public tenders and assets that SPAK claims have been hidden.
In fact, SPAK had previously requested authorization from the Assembly to arrest Balluk, but the request was rejected by a majority of 82 votes, while she continues to be investigated at large.
However, while citizens are coming before the court to demand that Veliaj not be released from prison, the same public pressure has not been seen for the arrest of Balluk, despite the serious accusations that SPAK has brought against her.
This situation creates the perception of a double standard and sponsorship of the protesters, with one being demanded with a megaphone to be kept in prison, while the other, for whom SPAK has also requested arrest, is lacking the same reaction.
In fact, neither Veliaj nor Balluku can be considered guilty without a final court decision. The presumption of innocence applies equally to both. This is precisely why it becomes even more problematic that public protest demands the concrete imprisonment of a person before the judicial process has been completed.
If the criteria are the importance of the accusations and the fight against corruption, why is the "cell" requested only for Veliaj and not for Balluk?
