"Mother Teresa" Square is expected to change as part of a new project of the Albanian Development Fund, which envisages the reorganization of public space and the development of a large underground complex.

For the construction of the project structures, the ADF has opened the procurement procedure with a fund limit of 2.08 billion lek, over 21 million euros.

The tender, opened at the Public Procurement Agency, is part of the project " Construction of multimodal mobility nodes, Region 1&2 " and specifically covers the structures for the construction of multifunctional public spaces and underground parking in "Mother Teresa" Square.

What is expected?

The intervention goes beyond a new parking lot. The technical project foresees that most of the new functions will be developed underground, while the surface of the square will be re-conceptualized as a space primarily for pedestrians.

The complex includes parking, an archaeological museum, a chapel dedicated to Mother Teresa, and service facilities for visitors.

The underground structure will extend over several levels. At a level of -4 meters, a multifunctional lowered square is foreseen, which will also function as an entrance and distribution space towards other functions of the complex. From it, the bar-restaurant, chapel and museum lobby will be accessed. Parking will be developed at the level of -7.75 meters, while the main space of the archaeological museum will descend to -19 meters.

The parking lot is designed with a capacity of approximately 170 spaces and will be directly connected to the public spaces and other functions of the complex via stairs and elevators.

Another important part of the project is changing the way vehicles circulate in the area. Traffic that currently passes on the surface of the square is expected to be moved to an underground ring road, which will surround the parking area.

Access will be via three ramps with two lanes each: one on the axis of "Dëshmorët e Kombit" Boulevard, in the segment between the Palace of Congresses and the Presidency, and two others on "Lek Dukagjini" Street, in front of the university building.

The underground traffic corridor is designed with two lanes of 3.5 meters each, while pedestrian crossings are also provided on both sides, intended mainly for personnel, maintenance and evacuation in emergency cases.

The museum's reception and entrance area will be approximately 500 square meters and will include ticketing, information, administrative facilities, and spaces for educational activities and exhibitions. The Mother Teresa Chapel is designed to cover an area of approximately 700 square meters.

Another area of about 340 square meters is reserved for a bar-restaurant, integrated into the sunken square and the cultural complex.

From a structural point of view, the project relies on a system of reinforced concrete columns, beams and slabs, while the depth of the excavation requires perimeter retaining walls that form the protective structure of the underground complex./ Monitor
