The need for gasification of the country, almost half of the families are heated

Firewood and coal are the main source of heating for Albanian families. The latest data available from INSTAT show that almost half of the families use stoves or fireplaces for heating their homes, followed by electricity in second place and the rest with gas.

"In mountainous areas, citizens use wood heating also because there are problems in the electricity distribution network and for another reason that citizens find it easier, while the rest only use electricity, which directly affects the burden on the network, especially now and with the arrival of the end-of-year holidays", said expert Azmer Dulevič.

Based on the cities of Kukësi, Dibra and Korça, the highest percentage of wood is used for heating, while Tirana, Durrësi and Vlora use electricity the most.

Even though they have the equipment available, citizens are afraid of high bills at the end of the month.

"Not all citizens have the opportunity to heat their entire apartment. So they just use an air conditioner and the other rooms are cold. We cannot talk about welfare but about survival".

Only 4% of Albanian families in the whole country use gas for heating due to the high risk it presents. But according to experts, the implementation of a central system would increase the quality of life.

"The solution to increase the quality of life would be a gasification network, but it seems that it is far away in our country and at least for another 15 years", adds the expert.

Over the years, families in Albania express different trends regarding the ownership of long-term devices such as: microwaves, solar panels, air conditioners or multi-function devices.

More than 75% of Albanian families own devices with multiple functions, an indicator which has increased by about 5.7 percentage points in 2022 compared to 2021. It is the citizens of Gjirokastra who own more with 17.6 percentage points .
