Rail transport seems to have returned to the investment spotlight. A number of projects have progressed this year. Just a few days ago, the European Commission awarded a 62 million euro grant for the construction of the Durrës - Rrogozhinë railway, which is part of Corridor VIII.

The total value of this investment is estimated at 120.5 million euros, while the EC grant came after the inclusion of this important corridor for the movement of goods and passengers, in the main trans-European transport network, otherwise known as TEN-T. This segment is part of the Durrës - Pogradec railway line, which connects Albania with North Macedonia through trains. The length of the segment, for which the grant was awarded, is 33.1 km.

Another project for which there were developments this year was the Vorë-Hani i Hoti railway. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development advanced the procedures for granting a sovereign loan of 62.9 million euros for the rehabilitation of this line. At the same time, an initial budget for the implementation of the project has been allocated in the next year's budget. The rehabilitation of this railway line is expected to be co-financed by the European Investment Bank and the European Union through the Western Balkans Investment Framework.

Meanwhile, the total cost of the project is estimated at around 267 million euros. The railway line Vorë - Hani i Hoti has a length of about 120 km and crosses the Western Lowlands of Albania, running from south to north.

Developments have also been noted for the Durrës - Pristina railway, since a few weeks ago the Albanian Railways announced the consortium of winning companies for the design of the feasibility study, which will then serve for the tendering and implementation of the project.

Meanwhile, for the Tirana - Durrës railway and the new branch towards Rinas, work is being done for its completion. Until the completion of these projects, the length of the railway network in use in the country remains only 204 km. The 3 usable lines are Kufi-Gjorm, Durrës-Elbasan and Fier-Vlora.
