The stay of Afghans in Albania is extended by 6 months

The Afghans who came to Albania a year ago, when the Taliban took power, will stay in our country for another 6 months. This is the decision taken yesterday by the Council of Ministers and signed by Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku, in the absence of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

A year after they arrived in Albania, after the Taliban took power, the government has decided to extend the stay of Afghans in our country by 6 months.

" In support of Article 100 of the Constitution and Article 82 of Law No. 10/2021, "On Asylum in the Republic of Albania", with the proposal of the Minister of the Interior and the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the Council of Ministers decided : 1. After point 2, of decision no. 501, dated 25.8.2021, of the Council of Ministers, point 2/1 is added, with the following content: "2/1.

With the end of the term defined in point 2 of this decision, the stay of persons who are still in the territory of the Republic of Albania is postponed for another 6 (six) months". 2. The Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Tourism and the Environment and the Ministry of Finance and Economy are charged with the implementation of this decision. This decision enters into force immediately and is published in the 'Official Gazette '", says VKM.


We recall that 2,400 Afghans temporarily took refuge in Albania in 2021 after their lives were endangered by the Taliban who came to power. A very small part of them have left for the USA, while another 2,100 stay in Shengjin and Durrës waiting for visas.

Albania was among the first countries that offered to host Afghan citizens who were forced to leave their country due to the threat from the Taliban. The Albanian authorities expressed their willingness to accommodate up to 4 thousand people.

The Afghan citizens who have taken refuge in Albania at the request of the USA and the decision of the Albanian government, after the departure of the Americans from Afghanistan and the seizure of power by the Taliban, have taken refuge in residential areas in Durrës and Shengjin. Many Afghan citizens settled in Albania are waiting for the approval of asylum procedures and want to go to the USA.
