Rama asked SPAK to investigate Berisha and Meta, Yuri Kim: What do prosecutors

US Ambassador to Tirana, Yuri Kim said tonight on the show "Open" that Albania will be a good friend and partner for its country when corruption, organized crime and corrupt courts are eliminated.

Kim has again commented on the call that Prime Minister Edi Rama made to SPAK to investigate Sali Berisha and Ilir Meta.

Eni Vasili: Is Albania on the right track for the establishment of these institutions that you talked about?

Ambassador Kim: This is a very difficult path but we believe you are on the right track and you see this reflected in our reports, you see it reflected in the EU progress reports. Of course, once again, it does not mean that everything is 100% and everything goes clockwise. It is clear that there are areas where progress is needed and therefore we say that, for example for justice reform, it is not easy, fast or perfect, but it is definitely making progress.

Eni Vasili: I understand and since we are here in the justice reform, and of course, the expectations of the Albanian citizens, also for the fact that it has been supported a lot by you, there are really very high expectations, let's stop. In recent days, Prime Minister Rama has made several statements, let's call them accusations, strong criticism of the Special Prosecution, asking for the investigation of political opponents, Berisha and Meta. What would you consider this, an extreme, justified upheaval, or is there something wrong with the separation of powers, a violation if we can call it that?

Ambassador Kim:I spoke about this a few days ago, when the Minister of Justice repeated what the Prime Minister had said. The view of the United States is that when we look at justice reform, we will know that it has really succeeded when it is no longer called normal or appropriate for political leaders, whether in power or out of power, but especially if they are in power, to do so. calls for the prosecution of specific individuals. What we want to see is not the mention of specific names, but a system of established justice and institutions that have both the will and the ability to enforce the law, equally, for everyone, so that no one is above the law. The law should be applied equally. Therefore, I look forward to the day when we can have this trust in the Albanian justice system, in the prosecutors and judges of Albania.
