"He was an excellent student, he continued studying economics, but in the second year he started behaving strangely, became nervous and began to conflict with everyone. After many vicissitudes, we visited him at a psychiatrist. Today he is being treated but lives in isolation, refuses to go out out".
This is the story of a 30-year-old young man who lives with his parents and younger brother for rent in one of the suburbs of Tirana.
The teary-eyed mother tells how difficult it was for her to accept that her son suffers from a mental health illness.
"The man didn't want to, but I insisted on taking him to the psychiatrist. It's good when I take the medicine, if I stop taking it, it immediately returns to its previous state', says the woman, who lowers her eyes in shame, as if she feels guilty for the problem that has befallen her family.
Stigma and prejudice have made him barely able to talk about his son, once an excellent student, who is now locked inside the walls of the house. It seems as if she is the only one who carries such a problem on her shoulders, but expert doctors in the field point to an increase in the number of people affected by mental health problems.
"The case of the 35-year-old who 'imprisoned' the family because of his paranoia and fear that they would be harmed, is not the only one. In recent years, mental health problems are increasing, and psychoses or paranoia are the most common. The young active age group is the most affected, 25-50 years old, but cases over 65 years old are not excluded, says the psychiatrist Valentina Asabella for Gazetasi.al , at the community mental health center near the specialties polyclinic no. 3 in Tirana.
Asked specifically about the sensational case of the weekend, where a young man, an economist by profession, installed cameras in his house where he monitored his wife, mother and two minor children, the psychiatrist says that we are dealing with psychosis, the disorder of thought.
"Patients affected by psychosis live in a parallel reality, they say they hear voices, that they haunt them, some even read messages according to their minds, messages appear on the walls, they talk to invisible people", explains psychiatrist Asabella.
Doctor Asabella says that the sooner they are caught, the faster the recovery is.
"I have thousands of open cards, the intellectuals, those who read on the Internet and are more interested in the side effects of the medication than getting out of the condition as soon as possible," says psychiatrist Asabella.
The psychiatrist says that the causes of being affected by mental health diseases are not yet known, since they are not related to brain problems, but to emotions, which leads to behavioral and personality disorders.
According to her, the key factor in being affected by these diseases is the childhood period, and yet, instead of analyzing the causes, those affected should focus on treatment.
"Those affected by mental health problems must obey and trust the medication, which is the only one that restores them to their previous, normal state. An important role is played by the family, which in these cases should stay close, without stigmatizing or abandoning it. The first step in cases where their family member exhibits behavior or says words that are not related to the reality we live in, is a visit to the family doctor, who then refers him to a psychiatrist", says doctor Asabella.
Tirana counts 3 community mental health centers and yet not everyone knows where to go in cases where they have such problems in the family or beyond.
Due to the lack of information, the psychiatric hospital remains the first port of call, and yet serious cases with crises go there where, for the most part, the patients are accompanied by the help of the police.
But there are also cases when the patient, in the absence of information, goes to the hospital for treatment, because of the name he bears, there is quite a bit of prejudice.
'The hospital is the last link when the patient refuses treatment and his condition worsens. The family doctor is the first contact that family members should have to seek immediate help. It is the doctor who, after learning from the family members about the patient's condition, refers him to 3 community mental health centers, says psychiatrist Valentina Asabella.
But, if this does not happen, the family members are also directly responsible for allowing the patient's condition to worsen.
According to the psychiatrist, many of her patients who have been cured over the years, live and work like everyone else, without having to go through crises.
"If they are treated regularly, they live normally without any problems. But in Albania the prejudice is big and the media also plays a role. Many people with mental health problems are suicidal. Tolerance and empathy must be cultivated, but also non-neglect, as these people need all of us", concludes doctor Asabella.
