The world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, has been hit by a massive cyberattack that affected digital assets worth around $6.3 billion. The company said that around half of these assets have been frozen, while the rest still remains in the hands of the attackers.

Binance said it would cover all losses caused by the incident. Preliminary investigations suggest the attack may have started after the laptop of one of the company's engineers was compromised, allowing a hacker to make unauthorized withdrawals.

Two companies specializing in cryptocurrency transaction analysis, TRM Labs and Chainalysis, have attributed the attack to a North Korea-linked hacking group known as “TraderTraitor.” If confirmed, this incident would surpass the 2025 attack on the Bybit platform, where about $1.5 billion was stolen.

TRM Labs believes that some elements of the Binance attack resemble previous cyber intrusions linked to North Korea. Meanwhile, Chainalysis stated that it has “high confidence” that this group is connected to the incident.

Ari Redbord, global head of policy at TRM Labs, called the attack a “watershed moment” for the cryptocurrency industry, noting that it is unlike anything the sector has seen before. He said a significant amount of the stolen assets are still in the hands of the attackers, so efforts to track and recover them are far from over.

In recent years, groups linked to North Korea have increasingly targeted cryptocurrency companies, carrying out large-scale thefts. Western security agencies have previously warned that the funds obtained from these attacks could be used to finance Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs. North Korean authorities have consistently denied involvement in cyberattacks.

Following the attack, some of the largest companies in the cryptocurrency industry have stepped in to freeze assets related to the incident.

Tether and Circle announced that they have frozen a combined $2.4 billion. Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire said the company has frozen more than $800 million in assets, while Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino confirmed the freeze of about $1.6 billion.

Circle is the issuer of USDC, one of the largest cryptocurrencies backed by the US dollar, while Tether issues the digital currency USDT.

World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency company linked to US President Donald Trump and his family, also said it was working with partners to freeze the stolen funds. Meanwhile, Coinbase said its platform was not affected by the attack and that it was monitoring the situation.

Binance Co-CEO Yi He thanked the companies that helped freeze the assets in several tweets. She also announced that withdrawals had been temporarily disabled until it was confirmed that the system was safe again.

Binance stated that it is working closely with law enforcement agencies to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

The attack has also caused reactions in financial markets. Bitcoin fell by more than 4% after the news was published, while other major cryptocurrencies, including Ethereum and Solana, also recorded significant losses.

The incident affects the global platform Binance.com and not Binance.US, which offers trading services to US residents and stated that it was not affected by the issue.

Founded in 2017, Binance is estimated to have more than 300 million registered users worldwide. The company announced in 2024 that it had over $160 billion in assets under management. The latest attack has reignited concerns about the security of major cryptocurrency platforms, which remain attractive targets for hacking groups due to the high value of the assets they manage.
