Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates joined Greece in condemning a maritime agreement between Turkey and Libya, which it described as a threat to regional security and the international legal order.

The joint statement from the four countries was read by Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis at the United Nations in New York on Monday, Reuters reported.

The statement said the agreement raises “serious concerns for regional security and stability.” According to the statement, the agreement could set a bad precedent, as “arbitrary bilateral agreements” could undermine established rules of international law.

Gerapetritis said Greece is ready to continue negotiations with Libya on a special agreement that would define the boundaries of maritime zones. He called on Libyan authorities to work for good relations with neighboring countries and respect international maritime law during the political transition.

After Turkey and Libya signed an agreement to demarcate maritime borders in 2019, Greece approved a consortium led by the US company Chevron to explore for gas in the area near Crete.

We recall that days ago, the government of eastern Libya, an opponent of Turkey until yesterday, ratified a 2019 maritime agreement, which seals Turkish rule in the waters of the Mediterranean. This was a kind of geopolitical and geostrategic bomb that shook the international scene. Caught by surprise, several countries, led by Greece, are reacting, among them three Arab countries, which are known for their incoherent positions.
