The President of the European Council, António Costa, has announced that he has been informed by the President of the European Central Bank (ECB), Christine Lagarde, of her intention to step down on February 7, 2027.
In a statement published on the social network X, Costa expressed respect for Lagarde's decision and thanked her for her work at the head of the ECB since November 2019.
He praised the institution's leadership during uncertain times for Europe, citing the global pandemic, war on the continent, energy crises, and inflationary shocks.
According to Costa, Lagarde has led the ECB with responsibility and dedication, contributing to maintaining the stability and sustainability of the eurozone.
The process for selecting a successor begins
Costa also announced that the process for appointing Lagarde's successor will begin today and will continue without delay, with the aim of the decision being taken in due time by the European Council, in its eurozone composition.
The procedure shall be followed in accordance with Article 283, paragraph 2, of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.
The goal, according to Costa, is to guarantee an orderly transition at the helm of the European Central Bank.
