Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic has accused political opponents of preparing a campaign to arrest Aleksandar Vucic, following demands for his questioning in connection with the tragedy at the Novi Sad railway station, where 16 people lost their lives.
In a reaction on the social network X, Brnabić described this development as an attempt at political persecution, claiming that the goal is not to establish justice, but to remove Vučić from politics.
"They promised revolutionary terror, and now we are seeing revolutionary terror," she wrote.
According to Brnabic, less than 72 hours after the Student List's victory in the elections, a campaign has been launched to arrest Vucic. She considered the demands for his questioning unjustified, while demanding that the investigation also include the persons responsible for controlling the project and approving the works at the railway station.
Brnabic compared the Novi Sad tragedy to the collapse of part of the roof of the Charles de Gaulle airport terminal in France in 2004, which killed four people. She raised the question of whether then-French President Jacques Chirac would have been questioned as a suspect in that case.
"The goal here is to silence and remove Aleksandar Vučić, not to bring justice to the people," Brnabić declared.
She added that the Serbian Progressive Party will oppose what she called "revolutionary terror." Brnabic's statements come in a climate of political tension in Serbia, following the Novi Sad tragedy, which has prompted demands for accountability and investigations into the circumstances that led to the collapse of the railway station canopy.
The allegations of a plan to arrest Vučić are statements by Brnabić and do not, in themselves, constitute official confirmation that such an arrest is being prepared.
