About two years ago, Mesut Ozil officially announced his retirement from football and has since begun to build a new career away from the attention of the media and the world of sports.

At the age of 34, the German decided to end his career after his last adventure with Istanbul Basaksehir and stayed in Turkey with his family to deal with his new commitments.

But on Sunday, his career took a turn when he was elected a member of the Ankara council of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), the party led by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The congress held yesterday re-elected the Turkish politician as the party's leader for the ninth time.

The former footballer has never hidden his sympathy for Erdogan, even choosing him as a witness at his wedding to Amine Gülse in 2019, who was crowned Miss Turkey in 2014.

This closeness caused controversy during the 2018 World Cup, leading to his departure from the German national team.

After his playing career ended, Ozil embarked on a new life in politics. In recent months, he has amazed his fans by showing off his incredible physical transformation since retiring from football. However, he did not choose to continue in the world of sports as a coach or television analyst, a path that many of his former teammates have followed. The former player was born in Gelsenkirchen, but his family is of Turkish origin, a connection that he has always felt strongly and that has now led him to live in Turkey, where he will now work as a politician.

During a congress held yesterday in Ankara, he was elected a member of the central council of the AKP, the party founded by Erdogan in 2001. His election is not accidental, as Ozil has always been a big supporter of the Turkish president and has been photographed several times in his company on various occasions.

He was even a witness at Ozil's wedding in 2019, sealing a strong bond between them, which cost him criticism and his departure from the German national team long before his retirement from football, due to fans' opposition to his support for Erdogan.
