The elections for the head of the Albanian Athletics Federation were postponed

After many days of accusations and attacks, the elections of the Albanian Athletics Federation for the new president have been postponed. In the race was the champion Izmir Smajlaj, while there were accusations from Luiza Gega and Taulant Stërmasi (the acting president), that they were not allowed to run.

It was the Ministry of Education and Sports that brought the parties to the table a few days ago and it was decided that the statute should be improved before the elections. In addition to the president, in these elections that were scheduled for today (December 4), the Executive Committee and the General Secretary would also be elected.

Izmir Smajlaj was ready to hold an Assembly in accordance with the amended Albanian legislation in 2020, with the participation of associations in this electoral Assembly, as clubs must be transformed into associations based on this law and no longer sports clubs under the umbrella of local authorities.

Meanwhile, on the other hand, this change of status at the last moment of the 7 associations that would therefore be participating in this Assembly, brought the automatic exclusion of Taulant Stërmasi from running for president and Luiza Gegë from running for member of the Executive Committee, both of them last proposed by clubs that have participated in the last assembly of 2022.

This legal stalemate and clash of claims apparently could not get an immediate solution and therefore, in order to be equal and participate in this election process, it was decided by the Executive Committee of the Albanian Athletics Federation to take time, starting from the updating of the statute of this federation, which has not yet been approved either by the Ministry or registered in court, as it had to be adapted to the new law on the sport of the year 2020.

Thus, the updated statute will be sent to the Ministry of Sports, which will have 60 days to consult and approve it, and then with its approval and registration in court, the new election date will be determined, where again the candidates will be the same, Izmir Smajlaj in front of Taulant Stërmas, if the latter manages to secure an association to propose him as a candidate.
