Two American professors, Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford, have been announced as winners of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Economics for developing new economic models that help governments and central banks cope with external shocks and stabilize the economy.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the winners on Monday, during a ceremony held in Stockholm.

According to the academy, the work of the two economists has contributed to improving the way public institutions understand and manage economic fluctuations, helping to smooth out periods of rapid growth and decline in economic activity.

"The winners have helped us smooth out the peaks and troughs of the economy," the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in a statement.

The economic models developed by Hall and Woodford aim to give policymakers better tools to analyze the impact of external shocks and design policies that help maintain economic stability.
