Western intelligence agencies are raising serious concerns about an intensification of efforts by Russian spy services to carry out attacks and assassinations on European defense industry officials and executives. According to a report published by the British daily Financial Times, this development has forced military companies in Europe to drastically increase security measures around their management personnel.

In Russian intelligence jargon, these violent operations are known as “dry work” — actions often carried out by criminal elements. Intelligence officials believe the Kremlin’s main objective remains psychological: to spread uncertainty so that Western companies will think twice before signing contracts with Ukraine.

New targets, from defense giants to drone manufacturers

According to information gathered by the Financial Times from officials from five different intelligence agencies, sabotage and attacks on civilians — once considered taboo — are becoming an active tool for Kremlin agents. The targets are not only the heads of large corporations, but also executives of smaller companies, especially those that produce drones and their technological components.

In Germany, the Federal Intelligence Service (BfV) has intensified contacts with leaders of the German defense industry, recommending the employment of private security teams closely. Industry leaders confirmed that they have strengthened their personal protection over the past six months on direct instruction from state authorities.

The arrest in Poland and the situation in Italy

In parallel with these reports, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that authorities have arrested a person accused of planning an attack on him and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. The threats were received in the early hours of October 11 via electronic channels, immediately putting Polish security services in motion.

Poland, as a NATO member state bordering Ukraine, remains particularly exposed to such hybrid risks.

On the other hand, the situation in Italy appears calmer. Sources informed to the ANSA agency indicate that no specific warning about Russian plots has reached any official interstate communication channel. The same sources clarify that the descriptions published by the media are part of the general risk scenarios, which have been constantly monitored since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine.
