There is no joint resolution for Albania's EU membership, the DP votes

The Albania-European Union Stabilization and Association Parliamentary Committee failed to come up with a joint resolution at the meeting held today in Strasbourg.

This is because Democratic MPs did not vote in favor of the final draft, which was voted on by Socialists and MEPs.

The text of the document, proposed by the Secretariat of the Parliamentary Committee, was also attached to the resolution of the European Parliament and the Resolution adopted by the Albanian Parliament regarding the EU membership process. According to the socialists, this was sufficient for them not to submit amendments.

"Under these conditions, repeating the content of these two resolutions, while simultaneously removing the parts that clearly evidence Albania's positive progress on this journey, had neither political meaning, nor institutional logic, nor additional value for the joint text. It is also important to note that a number of amendments proposed by the Democratic Party were also supported and voted for by representatives of the Socialist Party, precisely in the consensual spirit that should characterize a process as important as Albania's membership in the European Union", the socialists explain at the end of the meeting.

"The Socialist Party deputies voted for part of the Democratic Party's amendments, with the exception of the wording that did not reflect the spirit of a joint parliamentary document. The attempt to distort the balance of the document, through the complete exclusion of any reference that reflects the progress recognized and certified by the European Commission's report on Albania and the notification of the closure of the negotiation chapters, could not be accepted."

While the Democrats claim that they voted against because the socialist majority rejected 30 amendments submitted by the DP, which in their essence contained the vital criteria and requirements for advancing the European integration process.

"The majority voted against proposals aimed at intensifying the fight against corruption, waiving the political protection offered to officials accused of corruption, implementing court decisions, in particular the Constitutional Court, and strengthening control, transparency and accountability mechanisms. These are fundamental standards that the European Union considers necessary for building a state of law and for advancing the integration process," a statement from the DP group said.
