After losing the election, Vance begins to break away from Trump's shadow:
J.D. Vance

In an effort to salvage the Republicans' midterm election results, US Vice President JD Vance changed strategy in the final days of the campaign. He talked less about President Donald Trump and focused on issues that represent his political identity.

According to a Reuters analysis of six speeches since the Republican convention in September, Vance has largely supported the Republican campaign on issues related to his own platform. He has avoided Trump's most controversial policies, including the war with Iran and deportations, at a time when polls have shown the president's popularity and influence over Republican candidates are declining.

The shift was deliberate. According to two people familiar with the strategy, Vance and his advisers felt that the issues on which he had built his profile, such as economic nationalism, restraint in foreign policy and public safety, could have more impact with voters. Although these positions are part of Trump’s MAGA movement, Vance has become one of their main supporters.

The move is seen as a first indication of how the 42-year-old may begin to build his political career as Republicans begin to think about the post-Trump era. Vance has not declared whether he will run for president in 2028, and Trump has not yet endorsed any candidate. However, he is considered one of the most likely names for the upcoming presidential race.

Vance took a more visible step toward boosting his political profile on Wednesday, when he issued a direct response to the Republicans' loss in the midterm elections. He blamed the war with Iran for the poor showing and laid out several proposals for the party's comeback, calling for a swift end to the conflict, a focus on the cost of living, a review of relations with other countries, and a change in the U.S. relationship with Israel.

His stances contrast with those of Trump. The president has dismissed Americans' concerns about the rising cost of living as a "hoax" by Democrats, and decided to go to war with Iran after constant pressure from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump has also expressed support for Netanyahu in Israeli elections.

In the final days of the campaign, Vance tried to convince voters to support Republicans by focusing on investigations into fraud in federal health and welfare programs, as well as immigration and the cost of living. In his speeches, he mentioned Trump very little and almost nothing about the war with Iran or rising gas prices.

"I want my children to raise families in a vibrant, thriving, free and prosperous country. I want the simple things. And, as I want these things for myself, I want them for you," Vance said at one of his recent rallies in North Carolina.
