Arizona sues L'Oreal over hair products: Accuses company of hiding cancer

The state of Arizona has filed a lawsuit against French company L'Oreal SA and its U.S. subsidiary, accusing the cosmetics giant of hiding evidence of the health risks of chemical hair straightening products.

The lawsuit was filed in state court on Thursday by Arizona Attorney General Kristin Mayes. According to Reuters, Arizona becomes the first U.S. state to sue L'Oreal over alleged cancer risks linked to the products.

The lawsuit alleges that L'Oreal violated consumer protection laws by marketing so-called "hair relaxers" without warning users of the potential risk of ovarian and uterine cancer.

These products are used primarily by African-American women to chemically straighten their hair. According to the lawsuit, the company allegedly continued to advertise and sell them despite claims that there was data linking them to serious illnesses.

The case filed by Arizona comes at a time when L'Oreal is facing thousands of similar lawsuits from users and their families in the U.S. The lawsuits allege that exposure to these products caused or increased the risk of cancer in women who used them for years.

At the heart of the case is the question of whether the company was aware of the potential risks and whether consumers were properly informed about them. Arizona authorities are seeking to hold L'Oreal liable for the way it marketed the products and for failing to warn women who used them.

The Arizona lawsuit could open a new legal chapter for the cosmetics industry, especially for chemical hair products that have been part of the American market for years and have been widely used by certain communities of women.
